Why Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox Support Web Authentication API?

Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox agrees with the term Web Authentication. The web browser supports a new Web Authentication API that should reduce the need for a password for logins and it helps the customer to protect them against phishing. Internet Standards Organizations W3C and FIDO Alliance have unveiled a new specification that let browser and websites to replace passwords with biometric encryption methods.

With the Help of new specification called WebAuthn, Web developers now able to integrate fingerprint readers and face scanners into their websites. This method relies on public-key cryptography & also ensures that each site a user signs up to has its own key pairs, it can solve the common issue of password reuse. In the website when API is available, visit the site, hit the login button, and then you receive a code asking you to register.

This new feature is available now in the Firefox, Chrome & Edge. 

I think this feature is good for Enterprises & online service provider is that they can protect themselves and their users will able to deploy standards-based strong authentication that works through the browser.

“After years of increasingly severe data breaches & password credential theft, now is the time for service providers to end their dependency on vulnerable passwords and one-time-passcodes & adopt phishing- resistant FIDO Authentication for all websites and applications”, said Brett McDowell, executive director of the FIDO Alliance. On the other hand, W3C CEO Jeff Jaffe said, “WebAuthn will change the way that people access the web.”
